Chalaban combines the traditions of the band members' homeland with music from the Carpathian Basin. The music sees a return to their African roots, with the discovery of South Moroccan musical influences which stretch even further south to the Sudan region: it is there that the Moroccan guembri meets the Burkino Faso kora and the Guinean balafon. While the lyrics talk of homesickness, spirituality and love, the music shows traces of desert blues, afrobeat and trance-music.
She is the perfect example of the successful blending of multiple ancestry, as befits her native Réunion. A volcanic temperament, with mysterious African, Indian and Asian roots. As for her style and aesthetic approach, no-one has managed to put her into any pigeonhole. She strives to create the unexpected. An uncategorisable rock pop musician and practitioner of world electronic music, though immediately recognisable thanks to her unique voice – protean, raspy, soft, animal-like.
